action
scanning
these pieces are made by performing
simple actions within range of the scanner beam.
in this, they are experiments in perception & time, & explore
notions of self.
this work exists in an interzone
between:
gestural abstration, figurative surrealism, photography, digital
art,
theatre/dance, performance art, (phenomenological, action-oriented)
conceptual art,
& other interests.
when the subject is portraiture (or
explorations of the body),
the results tend towards the psychological & the surreal.
most distortions create nightmarish id-beasts that speak of
intense passions, mutations, & fluctuations of self.
others describe a calm awareness of shifting spacetime.
when the subject is an
object or a photograph,
the results tend towards the symbolic or phenomenological,
exploring transformations of icons & the perception of the passage
of time.
hands, eyes, & other symbolic
elements of the body
create images which partake of both tendencies.
these sometimes feel like archetypes or mythic entities.
by inserting movement into the scanning
process, this work simultaneously
illustrates the inherent nature & the limits of the technology.
for me, this work is both as complex as the union of photography
with computers,
& as simple as spilling paint. in these respects, these pieces
seem to reflect
the style & pace of the digital age, while using contemporary
techniques
to explore timeless metaphysical ideas.
